MORROW, Ga. – The Augusta University men's basketball team won its fourth consecutive game with an 83-73 Peach Belt Conference road win at Clayton State University in Morrow, Ga.
Augusta (11-3, 4-2 PBC) led safely the entire first half until Clayton State (7-7, 2-3 PBC) fought back into a one-point game in the second. With just over five minutes to go, the Jags regained the score and never let down to knock off CSU on their home floor.
The PBC Player of the Week, Keshun Sherrill, scored 28 points to lead all players on the night and he added four assists, three rebounds, and two steals. The Player of the Weekaward is the second for Sherrill this season and the fourth of his collegiate career.
Jags junior Tamyrik Fields scored his season-high 17 points after scoring 12 at the half. Fields scored in double-figures for the third-straight game and the fourth time this season. Sophomore Tyvez Monroe was 5-for-10 from three-point land to total 15 points and sophomore Deane Williams rebounded 11 shots with seven points.
The Jags held the Lakers to 37.1 percent (26-of-70) shooting from the floor, while shooting 47.3 (26-for-55). CSU won the rebound battle 48-34, but Augusta made five more three pointers to help them to the advantage.
Augusta led by 10 at the half and survived a late run from Clayton State.
Junior Kyle Doyle was fouled after grabbing an offensive rebound to open the second half and made a free throw to score first. Augusta followed with Monroe burying his fourth trey ball with over 18 minutes in the half as the Jags led a 52-40 game.
Ja'Shawn Brooks booked the eighth three pointer for the Jags with 14:50 in the second half, but Clayton State got it back to under a 10-point game and a Nathan Powell free throw made it 58-50.
Monroe stayed sizzling from the arc and spoiled a CSU run with another three pointer. The Jaguars were on top 63-54 with 11:54 to go when the Lakers went on 8-0 run to cut the score to 63-62 – the closest they had been since the opening bucket. Sherrill ended the drought with a deep jumper on the right side and he made another off a screen to give the Jags 72-64 lead.
The lead never dwindled in the second half and up 79-70 with 1:04 to play, Augusta found themselves on the free throw line with Dereck Oliver. He made the pair and the Jaguars prevailed past the Lakers.
The Jags meet in Milledgeville, Ga., with the Georgia College Bobcats for a 3:30 p.m. Peach Belt Conference game on Saturday, Jan. 14 in the Centennial Center.
