Jags Hoops Continues PBC Play At UNC Pembroke Jan. 2

PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Augusta University men's and women's basketball teams begin 2017 with a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader against UNC Pembroke in Pembroke, N.C., on Monday Jan. 2. The Lady Jags tipoff at 5:30 p.m. against the UNCP Braves and the Jaguar men follow at 7:30 p.m. in the English E. Jones Center.

WOMEN'S PREVIEW

Augusta (5-3, 0-2 PBC) sits fifth in the PBC East Division, while UNCP (6-3, 1-1 PBC) is second in the east.

Augusta is averaging 72.3 points per game. Senior Breonna O'Conner leads the team with 15.4 points per game and junior Abrea Harris is scoring 11.3 points per contest. Harris' 52.7 field-goal percentage is the ninth best in the Peach Belt.

The Braves are 3-1 at home this season and are coming off a 73-64 win over Belmont Abbey on Dec. 30. UNCP'S Ebone Stevens ranks second in the league with a 45.5 three-point percentage.

 

MEN'S PREVIEW

Augusta (7-3, 0-2 PBC) looks to rebound after dropping their last two games to open conference play. The Jags sit fourth in the Peach Belt, while the Braves (9-2, 2-0 PBC) lead the PBC East Division.

Augusta is averaging 81.9 points per game and are 2-2 in away games this season. Senior Keshun Sherrill leads the PBC in points per game (26.1 ppg), points (261), threes (30), and free-throw percentage (90.5 percent). Sherrill is second in made field goals (82) and free throws (67). Junior Kyle Doyle's 64.5 field-goal percentage is the best in the league.

Head Coach Dip Metress is 21-4 against the Braves during his 13 years in Augusta and won both meetings last season in the 2015-16 slate.

UNCP is 5-0 at home on the year. Alex Bradley is third in free throws (59), assists (62), and steals. Akia Pruitt's 25 blocks are the most in the PBC and the team leads in steals and free-throw attempts per game.
