Jags Hoops Tips Peach Belt Play Dec.16 At North Georgia

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – With a successful run in non-conference play to start to the season that earned them each regional rankings, the Augusta University men's and women's basketball teams start Peach Belt Conference play this Friday, Dec. 16 at the University of North Georgia in Memorial Hall.

The women tipoff at 6:00 p.m. and the men's game is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.

JAGUAR MEN PREVIEW

Augusta men's basketball (7-1) has won four in a row and are 2-0 on the road this season. Averaging 80.8 points per game, Augusta leads the PBC East Division by one game over USC Aiken while the North Georgia Nighthawks are ranked sixth in the West Division.

Senior Keshun Sherrill leads the PBC with 24.3 points per game (194 points) and 24 made three pointers (48.0 percent). The Jags All-American is second in made free throws (46-of-50) and free-throw percentage (92.0 percent). Jags junior Kyle Doyle leads the league with a 68.1 field-goal percentage and sophomore Deane Williams sits sixth with a 57.9 mark.

North Georgia's Shaquan Cantrell has made 67-of-120 field goals to lead the league, Sean Brennan is second in assists (54), and Denzell Hosch and Ebo Smith sit second and third behind Sherill for the most threes.  

Metress is 11-4 against North Georgia during his 13 years in Augusta. In their last meeting on Jan. 7, 2016 in Dahlonega, the Jaguars scored a go-ahead layup off an offensive rebound with 26 seconds left to hold off the Nighthawks 86-85. Both teams shot above 50 percent from the floor with the Jags posting a 50.8 field-goal percentage and UNG 51.7 percent. Augusta hit 15-of-18 free throws (83.3 percent) to the Nighthawks' 11-of-20 (55.0 percent) and the Jags got 36 points from off the bench and outscored UNG 54-42 in the paint.
