Jags Blow By Bowie State 70-59 For Three In A Row

BOWIE, Md. – For the fifth straight season, the Augusta Jaguars (6-1) played Bowie State University (3-4) in a non-conference battle. Augusta took down the Bulldogs 70-59 on the home court on Sunday afternoon for the team's third consecutive victory.

Jaguar head coach Dip Metress is 5-1 against the Bulldogs during his 13 years in Augusta.

Augusta senior Keshun Sherrill scored 16 in the first half and ended with 29 points to lead all scorers. Sherrill went 6-for-6 at the free-throw line and 10-for-19 (52.6 percent) from the floor in the win. He leads the Peach Belt Conference with 23.5 points per game.

Junior Kyle Doyle ranks first in the PBC with a 74.2 field-goal percentage and he scored six points with nine rebounds. Sophomore Tyvez Monroe grabbed six defensive boards and scored six points with three assists, while sophomore Deane Williams added eight points and four rebounds while dealing with foul trouble.

Eight of the 10 Jaguars seen playing time recorded points to give Bowie a balanced offensive attack to deal with. BSU guard Ahmaad Wilson led the team with 17 points. Enuoma Ebinum and Michael Briscoe each scored 13 points.

The deep shot plagued Bowie as they went 3-for-15 (20.0 percent) from beyond the arc and Augusta 6-for-14 (42.9 percent.). A 41-32 rebound differential benefited the Jags as did 15 second-chance points to BSU's 10.

Under 12 seconds in the first half, sophomore Deane Williams made a six-foot jumper before Sherrill sunk a buzzer-beating three pointer to take the half up 48-38. The three-point shot was a deciding factor in the first half of play with Bowie shooting 3-for-13 (23.1 percent) and Augusta 5-fo-11 (45.5 percent).

The control of the momentum belonged to Augusta for the duration of the game. They led by at least 10 down the stretch and beat Bowie off the boards to help stay ahead.

For the third-straight year, the Augusta University men's basketball team will host Education Day on Thursday, Dec. 8 with over 2,000 fifth graders from Richmond County for a special 11:00 a.m. tipoff as part of an annual field trip. The Jags meet Voorhees College on Thursday, Dec. 8 for the non-conference game in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
