Three Point Shooting Powers Jags Past Voorhees On Education Day

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Over 2,000 fifth graders from Richmond County filled the stands of Christenberry Fieldhouse for the third-annual Education Day game on Thursday morning with the Augusta University men's basketball team. The Jaguars made the most three pointers they have all season with 15 against the Tigers to blow them out 103-64. Augusta had 11 players in the game and 10 recorded points.

Augusta is now 7-1 with the win, while Voorhees moved to 4-7 on the day. Jaguar sophomore Ja'Shawn Brooks scored a career-high 26 points in the win while going 6-for-8 from three point land. Brooks led all scorers and recorded all his points in the second half.

 

Augusta senior Keshun Sherrill recorded a career-high six three pointers in the game and finished with 24 points. Sherrill and the majority of the Augusta starters sat for the majority of the second half.

 

Junior Kyle Doyle took over in the paint with 14 points and seven rebounds and sophomore Ben Ursich scored 10 points with five boards. The team shot 53.2 percent from field-goal range to Voorhees' 35.9 percent and shot 46.9 percent (15-for-32) from beyond the arc.

 

The Jags jumped to a 24-8 lead at the second media timeout and controlled the pace of the game until the half. The team had a 20-point advantage with five minutes to go in the half. Sherrill sunk a corner three pointer off an assist from Dereck Oliver to beat the buzzer and put Augusta on top 46-25 at halftime. Sherrill had 14 at the half and Doyle nine points and four boards.

 

Voorhees' Denzel Famble turned in 12 points and four rebounds in the first half and he finished the day with 26 points. Dominique Mixon had 10 points and Greg Henry six points with four rebounds.

 

Augusta hit the 50-point mark with 17:20 on the clock in the second half and never looked back to blow out the Tigers.

 

Augusta starts Peach Belt Conference play on the road Friday, Dec. 16 at North Georgia for an 8:00 p.m. tipoff.
