GAME PREVIEW

Augusta head coach Dip Metress played one season for Wichita State head coach Gregg Marshall (then a young assistant) as a senior at Division II Belmont-Abbey in 1987-88 before launching a successful coaching career of his own.

"Gregg coached me my senior year in college in 1987-88 at Belmont Abbey where he was an assistant under Kevin Eastman," Metress said. "During that year we made the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City where we were blitzed by a very good Fort Hays State team, but one great thing came out of the tournament; Greg met his wife Lynn."

"In the 51 years as a basketball program we have never played in a basketball environment such as Koch Arena," Metress said. "The Shockers lost the winningest class in their schools history which includes two players that are currently on NBA rosters, and they are picked to win their league and in the top 25 in numerous preseason polls. I would say we have a monumental task in front of us."

Metress took over at Belmont-Abbey in 1996 and moved to Augusta in 2004. He has won over 400 games in his 21 seasons. He and Marshall have squared off on one other occasion as head coaches: Nov. 18, 2000 when Marshall led his Winthrop Eagles to a 55-44 victory.

Metress has taken the Jaguars to seven NCAA D-II Tournaments in 12 seasons, including a run of three-consecutive national quarterfinal appearances from 2008-10 and a 2008 national runner-up finish.

The 2015-16 Jags went 18-1, but fell to top-seed Lander in the Peach Belt Conference Tournament Championship on a put-back basket with two seconds to play in double-overtime. The 2016-17 squad is scheduled to return three starters, including three-time All-Conference performer Keshun Sherrill, who averaged 23.6 points last year and enters his senior season with over 1,500 for his career.

The Jags were picked to finish first in the Peach Belt Conference, while Sherrill his third straight preseason all-conference accolade.
