Jaguars Finalize 2016-17 Men’s Basketball Schedule

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta University head men's basketball coach Dip Metress has finalized the 2016-17 schedule and released it on Tuesday morning. The Jaguars host 14 of their 28 regular-season games in Christenberry Fieldhouse and host 11 doubleheaders with the women's hoops teams.

An exhibition game at Division I opponent Wichita State gives the Jags their first on-court test of the season on Saturday, Nov. 5. Metress, entering his 13th year as head coach for Augusta, played one season for WSU head coach Gregg Marshall (then a young assistant) as a senior at Division II Belmont-Abbey in 1987-88. He returns to face Marshall on the road in a preseason matchup. The game will be streamed live on ESPN3.

"Playing at Wichita is a yeoman's task because of their success the last few years," Metress said. "There are not too many better environments in college basketball than (Charles) Koch Arena."

"Our opening weekend is on the road where we will play two of the top programs in the Conference Carolinas to open up our 28 game regular season schedule," Metress said.

The Jags meet Mount Olive (Nov. 11) and Barton (Nov. 12) in Wilson, N.C., to officially begin the slate. The home opener is Nov. 17 vs. Claflin and it starts a four game stint in Christenberry Fieldhouse. Augusta hosts West Georgia (Nov. 19), Benedict (Nov. 22), and Wingate (Nov. 27) to break in the 'Berry.

December play beings Sunday, Dec. 4 with a visit to Bowie State in Bowie, Md.

"Playing at Bowie State enables us to get and keep our connection with the DMV area (D.C., Maryland, Virginia) when it comes to our current players having a chance to play close to home," said Metress.

For the third-straight year, men's hoops hosts Education Day with over 2,500 fifth graders from the CSRA for a special 11:00 a.m. tipoff as part of an annual field trip. The Jags meet Voorhees College on Thursday, Dec. 8 for the event.

"We are expanding Education Day to include the elementary school kids from Columbia County along with Richmond County to make it even bigger and better."

Peach Belt Conference action kicks off at North Georgia Dec. 16 and the Jags stay on the road with trips to Columbus State (Dec. 19) and UNC Pembroke (Jan. 2).

Metress' men compete in conference play at home in Christenberry for the first time of the season Jan. 5 with Georgia Southwestern and stay in Augusta to face Montevallo on Jan. 7.

Young Harris and Flagler travel to Augusta to give the Jags two games in one week. Augusta plays YHC Jan. 16 and Flagler Jan. 18 before heading out for two road games.

The rivalry comes back to Christenberry when Augusta hosts USC Aiken Monday, Jan. 30 for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff.

Military Appreciation Day is Saturday, Feb. 4 during the men's and women's doubleheader against UNC Pembroke. Hundreds of Fort Gordon soldiers with fill the stands as we honor our armed forces with pregame, in-game, and halftime festivities.

Augusta hosts Francis Marion Feb. 8, Armstrong State Feb. 11, and Lander Feb. 18 to close out their regular-season home slate. The Feb. 11 game will serve as the Pink Out cancer awareness game to benefit the Georgia Cancer Center.

Augusta University will celebrate 2017 Homecoming Saturday, Feb. 18 for the men's and women's doubleheader against Lander. Senior Day will also take place on Feb. 18 in between the women's and men's games.

The Peach Belt Conference Tournament begins Feb. 25 with the quarterfinal matchup and continues March 4-5 with the semifinal and championship game at the highest remaining women's east seed.
