Men’s Basketball Announces 2016-17 Signing Class

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta University men's basketball head coach Dip Metressannounced the five new recruits that have inked with the Jaguars to compete in the 2016-17 season on Thursday.

The Augusta Jags welcome junior transfers Ray Locke and Kyle Doyle and freshmen Shawn Moss, Dereck Oliver, and Mikkel Kolstad. The signees will join the returning cast of Augusta Jags for the season that begins in November.

Shawn Moss (Oxon Hill, Md.) graduated from Oxon Hill High School in Oxon Hill, Md. Moss was the team MVP during his four years, was an All-Star selection, and was named the 2016 Athlete of the Year at Oxon Hill HS. A dual-sport athlete in basketball and baseball, Moss was also a scholar athlete and on the honor roll.

Dereck Oliver (Baltimore, Md.) attended Patterson High School in Baltimore, Md., where he shined as a point guard. Oliver was named a first team All-Metro selection and first team All-City. The 5-7 guard won a state championship in 2012 at Patterson HS during his four years as a letterman.

Ray Lock (Aiken, S.C.) is a junior transfer from Erskine College whose 6-5 size will help the Jaguars in the paint. Lock averaged 14.9 points and 4.7 rebounds per game last season in 2015-16 for the Flying Fleet. He shot 69.1 percent from the free-throw line and 48.2 percent from the floor while earning Conference Carolinas Player of the Week accolades.

Kyle Doyle (Augusta, Ga.) is a local Augusta native who transferred from Georgia Southern University after two seasons. Doyle played in 29 games as a sophomore in 2014-15 and helped the Eagles to a 22-9 record and an appearance in the Sun Belt Championship game. As a freshman in 2013-14, Doyle competed in 30 games and scored 5.6 points per game while averaging 21.1 minutes per contest.

Mikkel Kolstad (Bergen, Norway) is a 6-3 incoming freshman from overseas in Bergen, Norway. He attended Langhaugen VGS in Bergen, Norway for three years and was a member of the National team of Norway for the U16, U18, and U19 squads. Kolstad was named the MVP on the U19 National Championship team. He averaged 17.1 points, 4.7 assists, and 3.4 rebounds per game in 2015-16.

Augusta, coming off an 18-11 record, reached the Peach Belt Conference Tournament championship game and missed a trip to the NCAA Tournament on an overtime buzzer-beating, tip-in basket last season.

In 2015-16, The Jags were ranked in the top 10 in the NCAA Southeast Region, while Metress surpassed 400 career wins and rising senior Keshun Sherrill picked up All-District and All-Conference honors.
