Augusta Downs USC Aiken 82-66 On Homecoming & Senior Day

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta Jaguars won an 82-66 Peach Belt Conference game over rival USC Aiken on Saturday in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

In a televised game produced by WJBF News Channel 6, Augusta (13-10, 9-7 PBC) and USC Aiken (6-17, 4-12 PBC) played the first of two rivalry contests and the Jags prevailed in the end of the second half. The Jags and Pacers meet again on Feb. 23 at the Convocation Center in Aiken, S.C.

Augusta University celebrated 2016 Homecoming & Senior Day on Saturday afternoon, honoring seniors Tommy Williams and Trevor Foreman. Fans received free Augusta Jags t-shirts, souvenir cups, and rally towels and a live band and tailgate kicked off the day in front of Christenberry Fieldhouse.

Augusta recorded a 51.6 field-goal percentage to Aiken's 38.2 percent and won the rebound battle 40-31. Junior Keshun Sherrill led Augusta with 21 points, four rebounds, three steals, and two assists.

Junior Keith Crump had 14 points with six boards, freshman Ja'Shawn Brooks and sophomore Tamyrik Fields each had 10 off the bench, and senior Deane Williams scored eight with five rebounds.

The Pacers held a slight advantage to open the game, but the Jags substituted a new starting five and freshman Aaron Byrd hit a three pointer on his first shot attempt for 9-6 Augusta lead. Byrd found freshman Ja'Shawn Brooks wide open in the corner for a successful three ball to push the Jags up by eight and Byrd found Brooks again for a consecutive three pointer to build a 19-8 spot for the Jags that resulted in a USCA timeout.

Brooks was 3-for-3 on three pointers in the first half and Trevor Foreman nailed one as well as Augusta took the break on top 39-34. The Jags shot just under 50 percent in the first half and came out of the pause and made the opening jumper from Crump.

The Pacers stuck around and made it a two-point game on Arbry Butler's one-handed floater after five minutes into the second half, but the Jags wouldn't allow a comeback.

Augusta held the advantage and pushed it back to a double-figure spread on a T. Williams two-handed dunk. The momentum and lead didn't leave the Jags as Sherrill scored five points in 35 seconds with just over four minutes to keep the lead strong.

Augusta travels for their next final three games of the season, beginning with a trip to Francis Marion on Wednesday, Feb. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
