Pirates’ Perimeter Shooting Too Much For Jags In 87-73 Loss

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta Jaguars couldn't overcome the three-point shooting of the Armstrong Pirates, who made 17 from beyond the arc, to beat the Jags 87-73 in a Peach Belt Conference contest Saturday afternoon in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

The Jaguars (12-9, 8-6 PBC) shot 53.8 percent from the floor to Armstrong's (9-12, 7-7 PBC) 43.8 percent, but the Pirates were 17-for-32 on three-point shots, while the Jags only hit four three balls.

Junior Keshun Sherrill led the Jags with 21 points and had three rebounds, two assists, and two steals. Senior Tommy Williams had 16 points and 11 rebounds with three blocks, sophomore Tamyrik Fields had 13 points, and junior Keith Crump put up 12 points.

Augusta connected on their first four shots of the game, but two Pirate three pointers and interior work tied the game and gave Armstrong an 11-8 lead at the first media timeout.

Junior Keith Crump hit his first three-point attempt for the Jags to bring Augusta within three with 8:45 in the first. Still down by eight, the Jags found new momentum when T. Williams slammed down a dunk in the lane. They cut it close, but perimeter shooting from the Pirates prevailed.

The Pirates hit 10 three pointers in the first half and held a 47-36 advantage going into halftime despite the Jags taking the first lead of the day.

Armstrong's Herbert Graham was 3-for-3 on three-point shots off the bench in the first half. Freshman Tyvez Monroe opened second-half scoring with a three ball for Augusta, but Armstrong's Nicholas Scott hit two straight three pointers to boost the Pirates ahead.

T. Williams took over in the paint and scored the next five points to bring Augusta to a 59-53 deficit. The Jags had the game within four points, but back-to-back treys from Shema Sabiiti spoiled the Augusta run and created a 10-point lead.

The Jags fell 87-73 to the Pirates for the second-straight PBC loss. The Pirates were led by Graham's 28 points.

Augusta hosts rival USC Aiken on Saturday, Feb. 13 for a 3:30 p.m. tipoff in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The women host the USCA Pacers at 1:30 p.m. before the men's game. The Jaguars will celebrate homecoming on Feb. 13 and 2016 Senior Day festivities will take place in between games. WJBF News Channel 6 will televise the men's game across the CSRA and a live band will perform in front of Christenberry starting at 10:00 a.m. for Homecoming.
