Final Second Layup Lifts Augusta Past North Georgia 86-85

DAHLONEGA, Ga. – Augusta senior Tommy Williams scored the go-ahead layup off an offensive rebound with 26 seconds left to give the Jaguars an 86-85 comeback road win at North Georgia in Peach Belt Conference action Thursday night for the Jags' fourth-straight victory.

For the game T. Williams led Augusta (7-5, 3-2 PBC) with 19 points and 14 rebounds. Freshman Tyvez Monroe hit three from beyond the arc and totaled 17 points, while sophomore Tamyrik Fields had 14 and freshman Deane Williams 10. Fields added seven boards and two blocks and junior Keshun Sherrill finished with 11 points, three rebounds and an assist.  

Both teams shot above 50 percent from the floor with the Jags posting a 50.8 field-goal percentage and UNG 51.7 percent. Augusta hit 15-of-18 free throws (83.3 percent) to the Nighthawks' 11-of-20 (55.0 percent) and the Jags got 36 points from off the bench and outscored UNG 54-42 in the paint.

Augusta took a 45-37 lead into halftime - shooting 54.5 percent from the floor. Sophomore Tamyrik Fields and freshman Deane Williams had an early eight points at the break and freshman Tyvez Monroe put up seven quick points.

Junior Keshun Sherrill hit a layup under a minute to close the first half, but the Nighthawks slowly cut the lead and stole the momentum with a put-back dunk from Juan Rivas off a missed three pointer to take a 55-54 lead at the 13:24 mark. Tanner Plemmons buried a trey and hit a free throw in the next possession to give UNG a boost, but the Jags responded.

D. Williams found freshman Ja'Shawn Brooks for a good three pointer with 10:34 on the clock to bring the game back to a 63-61 UNG favor. Augusta trailed by eight with just under five minutes to play and didn't take the advantage until the final seconds of the contest.

A T.J. Williams dunk put UNG up 85-79 with 3:17 to go, but Williams committed a foul on Fields who drained a pair of Augusta free throws to bring the Jags within four. Brooks got a steal and found Monroe for a layup and Sherrill got to the line and connected on one for a one-point game with 1:08 remaining.

T. Williams hit the go ahead layup and Fields blocked the next Nighthawk possession to keep Augusta ahead for the win.

The Augusta University men's and women's basketball teams will host the Day of Service game on Saturday, Jan. 9 at Christenberry Fieldhouse to recognize the Augusta University Day of Service participants from across the community. The Jaguars host the Lander Bearcats for a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader on Saturday, Jan. 9. The women tip off at 1:30 p.m. and the men follow at 3:30 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
