Dip Metress Basketball Academy Sees Success

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The 16th annual Dip Metress Basketball Academy wrapped up at Christenberry Fieldhouse on the campus of GRU Augusta Friday, June 13 with another large turnout of kids from all ages.

The week-long camp teaches basketball fundamentals to campers and helps in developing sportsmanship and team play. The camp included daily instruction from former and current Jaguar basketball players on ways to improve individual skills such as shooting, passing, and ball handling.

Men's basketball head coach Dip Metress says, "Our goals are to expose the campers to the fundamentals of basketball and teach the methods while letting them have a good time. Returning players are able to interact with kids and we're able to continue to build our fan base."

2013-2014 Peach Belt Conference Freshman of the Year and upcoming sophomore for the men's basketball team at GRU, Keshun Sherrill, says attending basketball camps when he was younger made him love the game.

"Summer camps did make me want to continue to play basketball. Every year I got better and better, because of those camps," said Sherrill. "I was young when I started basketball - maybe six or seven.  The first camp I went to, I worked on stuff from the past and learned some new stuff and kept working on that throughout my career."

The coed camp ran from June 9-13 and featured boys and girls, from first grade through 11th grade. Campers received an official camp T-shirt at the conclusion of the week and received daily lunch and contest prizes.
