Jaguars Hit The Hardwood

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta State men's and women's basketball programs return to the practice floor for the first time since last March this weekend.

The Jaguar men's squad, coming off its second 30-win season in the last three years, participates in its first official workout this afternoon at 3:45 p.m. ASU is entering its eighth season under head coach Dip Metress, a two-time Peach Belt Conference Coach-of-the-Year.

The Jags return two starters (senior guards O'Neal Armstrong and Tye Beal) and four letterwinners (juniors Kyle Armour and Travis Keels), along with redshirt freshmen Charles Robinson and Devon Wright-Nelson. Last season, ASU claimed its fourth Peach Belt Conference Championship in the last five years. Eleven newcomers, including eight true freshmen and redshirt freshmen, are listed on the Jags' preseason roster.

The Lady Jaguars are looking to build off of last season's five-win improvement from the 2009-10 campaign. Beginning its second season under head coach Nate Teymer, the ASU women's program features 10 newcomers and five letterwinners from last season's squad that began the year 4-0 and finished the season 8-18 overall. Sophomore Jemimah Ashby is the leading returning scorer after averaging 7.0 ppg., as a freshman in 17 starts.

The ASU men's and women's squads open the 2011-12 regular-season schedule on Wednesday, Nov. 16 with a doubleheader vs. Paine College, beginning at 5:30 p.m., in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
