Hurricanes Sweep ASU

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Georgia Southwestern swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader from Augusta State Saturday afternoon on Senior Day in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The contests marked the end of the regular season for both the ASU men’s and women’s teams.

In the women’s matchup, the Lady Jaguars rallied late in the second half to force overtime, only to fall to the Lady ‘Canes 76-75.

Sophomore center Sherika Parker booked a career-high 20 points while senior forward Shirrell Ford pulled down a career-high 18 rebounds to go along with 11 points for her third double-double of the season. Brittany Jarrard added 10 points for ASU, which fell to 17-9 overall and 9-7 in the PBC.

GSW (3-21, 1-15 PBC), which entered the day winless in conference play, got a team-high 15 points from Jamilah Sharp while Ivana Udovalieva and Brittany Reynolds each had 14 points. Angela Lamb added 10 points off the bench.

Sharp connected on the first of two free-throw attempts with 0.6 seconds remaining in the extra period to clinch the win for the Lady Canes. ASU dominated in the paint, owning a 46-22 edge.

Georgia Southwestern senior guard Shawn King exploded for 33 points and three other Hurricanes scored in double figures as GSW shot 54.0 percent in the game and handed the No. 8 Jaguars an 81-72 loss.

Norbey Aragon tallied 18 points for the Canes while Sean Cowley and Adrian Robinson had 11 and 10 points, respectively. Antonio Campbell contributed nine points, 10 assists and six rebounds.

ASU junior forward AJ Bowman registered 29 points, nine rebounds, three steals and two blocks to pace the Jaguars. Ben Madgen chipped in 14 points and Garret Siler accounted for 11 points and eight boards.

The loss -- the second straight by the Jags -- snapped a 14-game home winning streak for ASU in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The last team to exit Christenberry with a victory was Armstrong Atlantic State on Feb. 1 of last season.

The Hurricanes (14-12, 7-9 PBC), led the entire game until Madgen hit a pair of free throws at the 7:16 mark of the second half, putting the Jags ahead 56-55. King answered with a jumper on the next possession to spark a 9-1 GSW run and the visitors never trailed again.

ASU (22-5, 14-2 PBC), which only shot 38.7 percent for the game, got as close as four on freshman guard Kip Small’s three-point with 41 seconds left, but King made three straight free throws -- the last of nine straight points by King -- to thwart the Jaguar comeback bid.

ASU heads to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament next week in Greenwood, S.C., hosted by Lander University. The Lady Jags are slated to play in a first-round game on Wednesday, Feb. 28 while the ASU men’s squad will play on Friday, March 2.
