ASU Stretches Streak To Ten

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader from Lander Saturday afternoon in Christenberry Fieldhouse.

Senior guard Alla Batovska and sophomore center Sherika Parker each tallied double-doubles as the Lady Jaguars outscored Lander 39-21 in the second half en route to an 85-69 victory. Batovska scored 13 points and handed out 10 assists, while Parker booked 12 points and 10 rebounds. Junior point guard Deo Ngulela paced ASU with 17 points and freshman guard/forward Nicole Mealing had 12 points off the bench. Senior forward Shirrell Ford grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.

Lander junior guard Tiara Good led all scorers with 24 points -- 19 in the first half -- and freshman April McClendon logged a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

With the win -- ASU’s fifth straight and its sixth in the last seven games -- the Lady Jags improved to 14-6 overall and 6-4 in the PBC. The loss dropped the Lady Bobcats to 11-10 overall and 5-5 in league play.

After a back-and-forth first half that saw the Lady Bearcats take a 48-46 lead into the lockeroom, ASU came out and scored seven straight points to take a lead it would never relinquish. After Lander cut its deficit to three, the Lady Jags scored five straight points. The visitors cut their deficit to four, but never got any closer. ASU extended its lead to double digits on a Tiffany Paschal layup at the 4:46 mark and the Lady Jags held Lander scoreless the final 3:32 of the contest.

The Lady Bearcats shot just 19.4 percent in the second half and ASU won the rebounding battle 53-41. The Lady Jags outscored Lander 44-26 in the paint.

The ASU men’s squad extended its best-ever start in PBC play, improving to 10-0 with an 84-70 victory over North Division-leading Lander.

Freshman reserve guard Kip Small paced the Jags (17-3, 10-0 PBC) with a career-high 18 points and fellow freshman Ben Madgen matched Small’s effort with 18 points and nine rebounds. Junior forward Tyrekus “AJ” Bowman registered his fourth consecutive double-double with 11 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks. Freshman point guard Daniel Dixon chipped in 10 points and Small handed out a game-high six assists.

Lander’s Jason Davis and Zach Evans came off the bench to lead the Bearcats (13-8, 7-3 PBC) with 11 points each.

The Jags shot 62 percent in the second half and 52.9 percent for the game to pick up their 10th consecutive win and 12th straight home win dating back to last season. ASU is now 28-5 in Christenberry Fieldhouse under head coach Dip Metress.

ASU led 40-30 at the half and maintained its 10-point lead until the Bearcats’ Michael Griffin scored on a tip-in to pull within five at the 16:24 mark. The Jags countered with an 8-3 spurt to push its lead back to double-digits before the Bearcats used a 12-4 run to get as close as two on a Curtis Milner layup with 10:25 to play. The Jags responded with eight of the next 10 points and went ahead 71-61 on a Madgen trey with 6:41 remaining. Lander never got closer than 11 the rest of the way as ASU hit 7-of-10 free throws over the final 4:09.

ASU hosts Clayton State in a key PBC doubleheader on Wed., Feb. 7 at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. while Lander welcomes USC Upstate to Horne Arena.
