Jags Net PBC Road Sweep

FLORENCE, S.C. -- Augusta State junior forward Tyrekus Bowman and freshman forward Ben Madgen each scored 15 points as the Jaguars used a 25-9 advantage at the free throw line to claim a 79-63 Peach Belt Conference win over Francis Marion Saturday afternoon in the Smith University Center.

Five Jags scored in double figures as ASU improved to 16-3 overall and 8-0 in the PBC, marking the second-best start in school history for the men’s basketball program. Only the 1969-70 edition of the Jags had a better record through 19 games, posting an 18-1 record under former head coach and current PBC commissioner Marvin Vanover.

ASU’s 8-0 start in conference play matches the 1998-99 season for the best start ever in the PBC since joining the league for the 1991-92 season.

The win also ties third-year head coach Dip Metress with Vanover as the fastest to 50 wins in the program’s 42-year history. Metress has guided ASU to a 50-27 (.649) record in his first 77 games at the helm of the program, the same amount of contests it took Vanover to record his 50th win on the Jaguar bench.

In addition, the victory gives Metress his eighth season with 16 or more wins in his 11-year career as a head coach.

Bowman notched his second straight double-double and fourth of the season by grabbing a game-high 11 rebounds and adding four steals and two blocks. Freshman guards Daniel Dixon and Kip Small chipped in 14 and 11 points, respectively, while sophomore center Garret Siler booked 11 points, seven rebounds, and three blocked shots.

Raymond Dorsey led Francis Marion (5-13, 2-6) with 17 points and six rebounds. Kevin Ashford had a career-high 12 points for the Patriots and Dominic Bishop added 11 points and five assists.

Augusta State connected on 25 of 36 shots at the foul stripe, while FMU was 9-of-12. ASU also converted 19 FMU turnovers into 25 points.

The Jaguars closed the first half with a 17-2 run, erasing a 22-21 FMU lead and taking a 38-24 advantage at intermission. The Patriots managed to cut their deficit under double figures twice in the second half, the final time at 52-43 following a Dorsey layup with 12:38 remaining.

ASU answered with a 9-0 spurt to put the game away. Bowman ignited the run with a monster two-handed, fast-break dunk and concluded it with a tip-in. In between, Madgen scored five points on a three-pointer and a two-point basket.

In the women’s contest, Lady Jag junior point guard Deo Ngulela followed up her triple-double effort on Wednesday by scoring a team-high 12 points and ASU used a 53-34 rebounding advantage to earn a 61-50 win.

The win, the Lady Jags’ third straight and the fourth in the last five games, upped their record to 12-6 overall and 4-4 in the PBC.

Sophomore forward Tracey Paschal scored 10 points and senior forward Shirrell Ford tallied six points and a game-high 15 rebounds. The Lady Jags held advantages of 17-6 on second-chance points and 26-10 in points-in-the-paint.

Brittany Young led FMU (5-14, 2-6) with 14 points, while freshman forward Yasmean Dixon added 12 points.

Francis Marion owned a 19-12 lead at the 8:17 mark of the first half before Ford contributed a pair of baskets to fuel a 13-0 run, giving the Lady Jags a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

ASU went into halftime up 30-25 before an early FMU three-pointer brought the hosts to within 35-32. The Lady Jags then scored the next 12 points to push its lead to 47-32.

The advantage stayed in double digits until the Patriots closed their deficit to 55-47 with 1:40 remaining. Following an ASU turnover, Young canned a trey to pull FMU within 55-50 with 1:06 left. Ngulela then hit 4-of-4 free throws and ASU freshman guard Brittany Jarrard added a pair from the charity stripe in the final 45 seconds to seal the Lady Jag victory.

ASU opens a three-game PBC homestand by playing host to Armstrong Atlantic State on Wednesday, Jan. 31 in Christenberry Fieldhouse, beginning with the women’s matchup at 5:30 p.m.
