AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader from USC Upstate Saturday afternoon in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
Freshman reserve guard Brittany Jarrard paced the Lady Jaguars with 13 points in a 64-47 victory over Upstate. Sophomore forward Tracey Paschal had 11 points and senior guard Alla Batovska dished out 10 assists. Senior forward Shirrell Ford pulled down 10 rebounds.
Courtney Hawkins paced the Spartans with 12 points off the bench, while Aisha Littlejohn added 10 points.
With the victory, the Lady Jags improved to 9-5 overall and picked up their first win in conference play, improving to 1-3. Upstate dropped to 7-8 overall and 2-2 in the league.
ASU took a 39-17 lead into halftime after shooting 55.6 percent in the first half compared to just 15.6 percent for Upstate, which matched its lowest scoring first half of the season.
The Lady Jags never trailed, jumping out to a 13-4 lead less than five minutes into the game. Paschal’s jumper with 15 seconds before the half gave ASU its largest lead of the half at 22. The Lady Jags pushed their lead to 31 on a Batovska three-pointer as Upstate went scoreless for the first 6:38 of the second half. A 16-7 spurt by the Spartans over the final 4:58 accounted for the final margin.
In the men’s contest, freshman forward Ben Madgen tallied a game-high 23 points to lift ASU to an 86-69 win. With the victory, the Jags improved to 12-3 overall and are off to their best start since the 1977-78 season when they began the year 13-2. They also matched their best start in the conference since opening the 2000-01 season 4-0 in league play.
ASU sophomore center Garret Siler booked 20 points and junior forward AJ Bowman -- the PBC’s leading scorer -- chipped in 12 points. Freshman reserve guard Kip Small had nine points and six assists off the bench.
Daniel Quinlan, the PBC Freshman-of-the-Year in 2005-06, paced Upstate (10-5, 2-2 in the PBC) with 15 points and five assists. Jeremy Byrd and Ante Pikunic registered 13 and 10 points, respectively.
The Jags led the entire game, sprinting out to an 11-3 lead in the first 3:02 of the contest. A Demetrius Howard three-pointer gave the Jags their biggest advantage of the half at 38-23 with 4:11 to play. Upstate closed the half on a 9-4 run, with Luke Payne nailing a trey just before the buzzer to pull the guests within 10 at 42-32.
A layup by Byrd got the Spartans within nine at 49-40 before ASU answered with eight straight points to go up 59-42 on a Siler slam dunk. The Jags led by as much as 22 on two occasions, the last on a pair of Small free throws with 2:34 to play.
ASU takes on Armstrong Atlantic State in Savannah, Ga., on Wed., Jan. 17 in a PBC doubleheader beginning with the women’s contest at 5:30 p.m.
