Augusta State Wins Third Straight

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State used a torrid second-half shooting performance to down Winston-Salem State 81-67 Monday night in a non-conference matchup at George A. Christenberry Fieldhouse. The victory -- the third straight for Augusta State -- avenged ASU's 87-80 double overtime loss at Winston-Salem State on Monday, Dec. 16.

Junior forward Patrick Curran led three Jaguars (5-4) in double figures with 18 points on 6-of-6 shooting. Senior forward David Siebrands posted 14 points and a team-high five assists, while junior guard Jermale Wilkerson tallied 13 points. Winston-Salem State's Jay Maynard booked a game-high 21 points for the Rams, who fell to 4-5 with the loss.

Winston-Salem State had the hot hand early, connecting on its first eight shots from the field. In fact, the Rams' first miss of the game didn't come until the 12:57 mark of the first half when Darnell Gregory misfired on a layup attempt. ASU managed to keep within range, however, with Siebrands and Curran combining for 14 of the Jags' first 17 points. Curran's two free throws with 11:12 remaining in the half forged the first tie of the game. ASU enjoyed its biggest lead of the opening half when Siebrands put the Jags ahead 33-27 at the 4:09 mark with a layup. But WSSU would battle back, with a Maynard three-pointer and a Kassim Richardson layup pulling the Rams even at 35-all at the half.

As hot as the visitors were early in the first half, ASU was hotter after halftime, shooting 67 percent in the second half and 58 percent overall for the game. The Jags outscored WSSU 18-6 in the first 8:10 of the second half. ASU then used a 10-1 spurt over a span of 2:35 to take a commanding 21-point lead and held as much as a 20-point advantage with 1:55 left in the contest. The Rams hit six free throws and a basket at the buzzer to account for the final margin.

In all, 14 of ASU's 15-man roster broke into the scoring column. The Jags forced 20 Winston-Salem State turnovers and recorded assists on 17 of its 30 field goals.

The Jaguars return to action Saturday when they host Paine College in "The City Classic" in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The women's game is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. tipoff, with the men's tilt slated to begin at 8:00 p.m.
