AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State doubled up USC
Aiken 42-21 in the second half to give the Jaguars a 69-48 victory
over the Pacers Saturday night at Christenberry Fieldhouse in the
Peach Belt Conference opener for both teams. The victory was the
first of the season for ASU (1-2, 1-0), while USCA drops to 0-4,
0-1
David Siebrands led four Jaguars in double figures with 18 points
on 7-of-10 shooting. Jermale Wilkerson tallied 12 points and five
steals, while Patrick Curran and Dean Brebner added 14 and 11
points off the bench, respectively. Siebrands and Wilkerson each
posted a team-high seven rebounds.
The Pacers immediately jumped on top in the first half and led by
as much as 10 midway through the opening half. A layup by Brebner
gave ASU its first lead at 22-21 with 4:42 left as neither team
managed more than a two-point lead heading into halftime.
A layup by Aiken's Jamall Gray at the 13:36 mark of the second half
tied the game at 37-all, but it was all ASU after that. Brebner
nailed a three-pointer to give the Jags a 40-37 lead with 13:28
remaining, and ASU outscored the Pacers 29-11 the rest of the
way.
In a wild women's game, ASU junior point guard Ernesia
Wideman took a pass from Melanie Massey and nailed a 19-foot jumper
as time expired to give the Lady Jags a 50-48 upset win over the
17th-ranked Lady Pacers. The victory snapped a six-game losing
streak vs. Aiken and was ASU's first win over USCA since Feb. 3,
1999.
Senior Arijana Sijercic and junior Shundra Johnson led the ASU
effort with 10 points while senior guard Tameika Bridges paced the
Lady Jags in rebounding with seven boards. No Lady Pacer reached
double figures in scoring.
The Lady Jags trailed for much of the contest before finding their
range down the stretch. ASU actually got to within one early in the
second half on a Sabrina Jones' layup at the 16:12 mark before the
Lady Pacers pushed their advantage back to as much as eight.
But ASU outscored the visitors 14-4 over the final 8:23 to set up
the dramatic finish. A three-pointer from Wideman, her first of the
year, gave ASU its first lead of the second half at 48-46 with 1:40
left before Aiken's Allison Nold answered with a basket at the 1:18
mark to knot the game at 48-all. The Lady Jags then ran the clock
down for the final shot, with Massey finding Wideman all alone at
the top of key for the winning basket.
The Lady Jags return to action Monday when they host Claflin in a
non-conference contest at 5:30 p.m. in Christenberry Fieldhouse.
Both squads open their Peach Belt Conference road schedule
Wednesday, Dec. 4 at North Florida in Jacksonville. The women tip
off at 5:30 p.m., with the men slated to start at 7:30 p.m.
