AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State clinched its
fifth consecutive Peach Belt Conference North Division title and
head coach Gary Tuell garnered his 100th win on the ASU sidelines
as the Jaguars completed a sweep of Francis Marion with an 88-78
victory Saturday night in Christenberry Fieldhouse. The Lady
Jaguars dismantled the FMU Lady Patriots 64-40 in the opener of the
doubleheader.
ASU junior guard Jermale Wilkerson enjoyed his best game of the
season, pouring in a career-high 23 points to go with a career-high
10 rebounds and career-high eight assists. The double-double effort
was the second by an ASU player this season.
The victory pushes the Jags to 16-9 overall and 12-5 in conference
play. Francis Marion falls to 12-12 overall and 7-10 in the
league.
Francis Marion went ahead 4-2 before an 11-2 ASU run gave the
Jaguars a lead they would never relinquish. The Jags led by
as much as eight in the first half on two separate occasions and
took a 36-32 lead into halftime, despite the Patriots' 59.1 percent
shooting in the first 20 minutes. ASU helped itself with 50
percent shooting, including six three-pointers.
The Jags opened the second half on a 17-4 spurt to take a 17-point
lead at the 14:37 mark. FMU got within 12 before ASU pushed its
advantage back to 19 on a Chris Harriman three-pointer with 8:50
remaining. The Patriots battled back, closing to within 76-68 on a
trey by Mike Buglione at the 2:38 mark. ASU moved back out to an
11-point lead before a pair of Michael Jenkins three-pointers got
the visitors to within six with 25 seconds remaining. But three
errant shots and a pair of turnovers kept FMU from pulling off the
comeback.
Led by Wilkerson's career night, the Jags placed five players in
double figures. Harriman chipped in 14 points, while David
Siebrands and Patrick Curran had 13 each. Dean Brebner added 10 off
the bench.
Jaquan Bracey led five Patriots in double figures with 16 points.
Buglione tallied 15, while Randy Williams posted 14, Louis
McCullough 13 and Jenkins 10.
In the women's contest, the PBC North Division champion Lady
Jaguars shot 50 percent in the game and connected on seven
three-pointers to blow by Francis Marion 64-40.
Junior guard Melanie Massey posted a career-high 19 points and
Arijana Sijercic produced 12 points as the ASU reserves outscored
the starting five 36-28. No Lady Patriot reached double
figures.
ASU trailed 5-1 early on and didn't connect on a field goal until
Sijercic's layup nearly five minutes into the game. But the Lady
Jags caught fire, capping a 24-5 run with Shundra Johnson's jumper
at the 9:08 mark that gave ASU a 25-10 lead. FMU never got within
10 the rest of the half. ASU then shot 55 percent in the second
half and made 13-of-14 free-throw attempts to post its most
lopsided win of the season.
The victory moves the Lady Jags to 17-7 overall and 12-5 in league
play, while FMU drops to 9-16 and 4-13, respectively.
The Lady Jags host Montevallo in a single game on Monday, Feb. 24
at 5:30 p.m. before both squads close out their regular season home
schedule vs. North Florida on Wednesday, Feb. 26. Francis Marion
hosts USC Aiken on Wednesday in Florence, S.C.
