Pembroke, N.C. - Behind 14 points from former
Brave David Siebrands, the Augusta State University Jaguars
defeated home-standing UNC Pembroke by a 69-62 score Wednesday
night in the Jones Athletic Complex. Augusta improves to 14-8
overall, 9-4 in conference play. The Braves remain winless on
the season and now stand at 0-22, 0-13 in the PBC.
The stifling defense of ASU forced eleven turnovers in the first
ten minutes of play, allowing the Jags to forge an early 27-7
lead. UNCP was able to get off only one shot in the first
eight minutes of the period but capitalized at the free throw
line.
The Braves managed to put together a run of their own to end the
half behind the hot shooting of junior Rico Odom. Odom
finished the half 5-5 from the floor and 2-2 at the line for 12
points to lead all scorers at intermission. ASU would take a
39-27 lead into the break.
The second half would prove to be more exciting as the Braves
continuously made runs to cut into the Jaguar lead, pulling to
within nine on several occasions. ASU, who had been cold from
the charity stripe for the game, managed to seal the victory by
knocking down free throws down the home stretch. The final
margin of victory would be the closest the Braves would ever get at
seven points.
Three Braves collected double figures on the evening with Matt
Hubbard, Desi Crisp and Odom all finishing with 14 points.
Greg Joyner led UNCP on the boards with six.
Siebrands' 14 paced ASU, and Chris Harriman chipped in 13 points on
the night. Patrick Curran pulled down five boards to lead the
Jags.
UNCP shot an impressive 56 percent from the floor, compared to
ASU's 43 percent. The Jaguars, however, had 15 more shots
attempts than the Braves. UNCP also out-rebounded ASU
29-27.
ASU returns home Saturday to face Lander. Homecoming game
time is set for 7:30 p.m.
