AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Clayton State's Jerry Edwards
hit a free throw with three seconds left and Augusta State could
not get off a shot attempt at the buzzer as the Lakers escaped
Saturday night with a 61-58 Peach Belt Conference victory over ASU
in George A. Christenberry Fieldhouse. The Lady Jags edged Clayton
State 43-41 in the opener of the doubleheader, nailing 7-of-8 free
throws in the last 2:27 to secure the victory.
The Lady Jags move to 13-5 overall and 8-3 in PBC play with the
win, while CSU's women fall to 12-5 and 7-4. The Lakers' victory
pushes them to 12-6 and 7-4, while the Jaguars drop to 11-8 overall
and 7-4 in league play.
Senior forward Sabrina Jones paced the Lady Jags with 16 points
and Shundra Johnson tallied 10. Tameika Bridges and Arijana
Sijercic each grabbed nine rebounds for ASU. Clayton State's
Catreia Shaw led all scorers with 18 points and 10 rebounds and
Apryl Brown added 10 points. April Taylor posted a game-high 11
boards for CSU.
In the men's contest, Clayton's Mike Phenizee had a
game-high 14 points and Jamal Johnson booked 10 points and 10
rebounds. ASU's Marty Dunham scored 13 points, while David
Siebrands and Patrick Curran added 12 and 10 points,
respectively.
Both contests came down to the wire. In the women's matchup, ASU's
Ernesia Wideman hit six free throws down the stretch, her last pair
giving the Lady Jags a 42-40 lead with 17 seconds left. Clayton's
Shaw missed a chance to tie the game with eight seconds remaining
when she missed the second of two free-throw attempts. ASU's
Bridges grabbed the rebound, was fouled, and connected on
one-of-two at the charity stripe with 0:07 remaining.
In the men's battle, the Jags nearly overcame a five-point deficit
in the final 1:42. A three-point play by ASU's Ben Butler got the
hosts to within two at 60-58 with 1:13 left. Over the next 70
seconds, the teams traded misses before Edwards was sent to the
foul line with three seconds remaining. After missing the first
free throw, he nailed the second attempt and the teams swapped
timeouts setting up strategy. Chris Harriman received the ASU
inbounds pass and dribbled down the right sideline. His cross-court
pass went through Jermale Wilkerson's hands as time expired,
sending the Jags to their second straight loss.
The Jags hit the road Wednesday, Feb. 5 for a Peach Belt
Conference doubleheader in Savannah with Armstrong Atlantic State.
Game time is 5:30 p.m. for the women's game, with the men's game to
follow at 7:30 p.m.
Clayton State remains on the road, traveling to Columbus State
Wednesday to take on the Cougars.
