Jaguars, Lady Jags fall short in pair of upset bids

AUGUSTA, Ga. -- John Thomas' thunderous dunk with three seconds remaining lifted seventh-ranked Columbus State to a thrilling 67-65 victory over Augusta State and staved off an upset bid by the Jaguars Wednesday night in George A. Christenberry Fieldhouse. The CSU Lady Cougars, who entered the contest ranked 25th nationally, won the opener of the Peach Belt Conference doubleheader, downing the ASU Lady Jaguars 72-63.

With the victories, the 17th straight for CSU, the Cougars improve to 18-1 overall and remain a perfect 10-0 in PBC play. The Lady Cougars move to 17-1 overall and 9-1 in league play. ASU falls to 11-7 and 7-3, respectively, while the Lady Jaguars drop to 12-5 and 7-3.

Both of the contests matched the first-place teams from the two divisions of the PBC. Thomas led the way for South Division-leading CSU with a game-high 23 points, while Cedric Howell and Jed Bedford added 13 and 12 points each. Deshawn Bowman just missed a double-double, tallying nine points and 10 assists. David Siebrands paced ASU with 16 points, while Marty Dunham had 11 points off the bench and Chris Harriman chipped in 10 points, four assists and three steals.

In the women's contest, Columbus State came back from a seven-point halftime deficit to outscore ASU 49-33 in the second half. Candace Turner and Courtney Favors combined for 44 points to pace the Lady Cougars. Turner connected on 14-of-15 free throws en route to her 22-point effort, while Favors sank 7-of-12 three-pointers. CSU forced 28 Augusta State turnovers and collected 22 steals, including nine by Turner. Denise Stubbs chipped in 10 points.

Senior forward Sabrina Jones led the way for ASU with 18 points, while Ernesia Wideman added 14. Julie Robbins and Melanie Massey each posted 11 points in the losing cause.
