AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Six players scored in double
figures as Augusta State completed a Peach Belt Conference sweep
with a 103-56 rout of UNC Pembroke Saturday afternoon at George A.
Christenberry Fieldhouse. The Lady Jaguars won the opener, downing
UNCP 63-47 behind a career-high 17 points from freshman Julie
Robbins.
With the victories, the Jags improve to 9-6 overall and 5-2 in the
PBC while the Lady Jaguars move to 10-4 overall and 5-2 in league
play. UNCP remains winless on the season at 0-15 and 0-7, while the
Lady Braves fall to 5-8 and 1-6.
Junior forward Patrick Curran and junior guard Ben Butler paced
the way for ASU with a game-high 16 points each. Senior forward
Marcus Johnson and junior guard Jermale Wilkerson posted 12 points
each, while senior forward David Siebrands added 11 and freshman
guard Dean Brebner chipped in 10. Senior guard Chris Harriman
dished out nine assists and collected five steals. All 13 players
broke into the scoring column for the Jags, who snapped a two-game
slide with the win.
Matthew Hubbard, Anthony Crank and Desi Crisp each tallied 10 to
lead the Braves.
ASU immediately jumped out to a 9-0 lead in the first 57 seconds
and never looked back. The Jags forced 23 turnovers, including 12
in a first half in which they shot 68 percent from the field and
sank eight three-pointers. For the game, the hosts connected on 57
percent of their shots and posted 15 steals.
In the women's contest, ASU used a strong second half to take a
63-47 win over UNCP. The Lady Jags shot 55 percent after halftime
and forced 21 turnovers in the game. ASU led just 46-40 following a
jumper by UNCP's Ebony Orr at the 8:29 mark. But two free throws
from Sabrina Jones sparked an 8-0 run and the Jags went on to
outscore the Lady Braves 17-7 over the final 7:04 of the
contest.
Robbins led the way for ASU with a career-high 17 points on
8-of-11 shooting. Sabrina Jones tallied 15 and Ernesia Wideman
posted 11 points and four steals. Tameika Bridges contributed a
game-high 11 rebounds, seven assists and three steals.
Brittney Gaddy led UNCP with 12 points and Jameka Dixon booked a
double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. The Lady Braves got
just 12 points from their starters.
The Jags return to action Wednesday, Jan. 22 when they travel to
Greenwood, S.C. to take on Lander in a Peach Belt Conference
doubleheader. Game time is 5:30 p.m. for the women's game, with the
men's game to follow at 7:30 p.m.
