Jags Fall to Columbus State in Overtime, 71-68

Columbus, GA--For the second game in a row the Columbus State Cougars had to go to overtime, and for the second game in a row they came away with a win, downing Augusta State 71-68 at Lumpkin Center Monday night. The win was the 12th in a row for CSU, setting a new school mark for consecutive wins.

The game lived up to its billing as a clash between Peach Belt Conference division leaders. Augusta State came in unblemished at 4-0 in league play and sitting atop the PBC North, while CSU was also 4-0 and sitting atop the South Division.

The Jaguars took the early lead and led by as many as four points, 7-3, in the first three minutes of play. CSU took the lead at the 16:32 mark on a Jon Antonelli lay-up to make it 8-7 and would lead for the remainder of the half but never by more than seven points. CSU took a 31-27 cushion into the locker room.

In the second half, CSU kept the lead, except for one tie (42-42 with just under 12 minutes left) until Chris Harriman's leaning three-pointer found nylon with five ticks left in regulation. That shot tied the game at 62.

Deshawn Bowman was called for traveling at midcourt with three-tenths of a second left but ASU was unable to get any sort of shot, forcing the extra period.

The Cougars jumped out to a five-point lead in the first two minutes of overtime, with Deshawn Bowman's long trey giving them a 67-62 advantage. Augusta State came right back and scored six straight points to go up 68-67 with 56 seconds left. Another Harriman trey gave the Jags the lead.

The Cougars went ahead 13 seconds later on a pair of Cedric Howell free-throws and after a Patrick Curran miss for Augusta State, Bowman sealed the win with two more free tosses to make it 71-68. The CSU defense did not allow ASU to get a clean shot and Jermale Wilkerson's jumper was short to end the game.

Cedric Howell came up huge for the Cougars (13-1, 5-0). The senior went 8-12 from the field, and 4-5 from the line to post 20 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds and had two steals. He was a huge factor in the paint, getting a hand on numerous missed shots and keeping the ball alive. Jed Bedford was covered like a blanket for most of the night, but still managed to score 15 points, grab six rebounds, hand out four assists, and collect three steals. Bowman added 14 points, five rebounds, and five assists.

Harriman led the Jags (8-5, 4-1) with 12 points - all on long range shots. Patrick Curran and Ben Butler each chipped in 11 points. Leading scorer David Siebrands was held to eight points on the evening. Marty Dunham led the rebounding effort with eight as the two squads were dead even on the boards.

CSU will now hit the road for a key PBC South Division game at North Florida on Wednesday. Augusta State will return home to face Kennesaw State. Both contests are slated to tip off at 7:30 PM.
