AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Augusta State's Jermale
Wilkerson scored 18 points to lead the Jaguars to a 74-58 victory
over Paine College Saturday night in "The City Classic" at
Christenberry Fieldhouse. The victory -- ASU's fourth straight --
earned the Jaguars a split in the annual "City Classic." Paine
knocked off the Lady Jaguars 39-38 despite a game-high 22 points
from ASU senior forward Sabrina Jones.
Augusta State (6-4) jumped out to an early 10-4 lead and never
trailed en route to picking up its second straight win over the
Lions (3-7). The Jags used a 9-0 run in the first half to go up
19-10 before Paine responded with its own spurt, pulling to within
one at 24-23 on a three-pointer by Yari Scott at the 5:04 mark. ASU
answered with nine straight points in just 1:20, grabbing a 33-23
advantage on a pair of Wilkerson free throws with 3:44
remaining.
Early in the second half, Paine closed to within six on a layup
and free throw by Cervantes Boddy with 13:52 left, but that's as
close as the Lions would get. ASU, which shot 55 percent from the
the field after the half, strung together a pair of 7-0 runs to
take a commanding 17-point lead with 8:29 remaining. Paine never
got closer than 11 the rest of the way.
Paine's Scott led all scorers with 24 points, including four
three-pointers. ASU's frontcourt tandem of David Siebrands (15) and
Patrick Curran (14) combined for 29 points, with Siebrands pulling
down a game-high nine rebounds.
In the women's game, ASU's Ernesia Wideman couldn't connect on a
short jumper in the closing seconds as Paine (7-3) escaped with a
hard-fought 39-38 win over the Lady Jaguars, who fell to 6-3 with
the loss.
Jones was the only Lady Jaguar to reach double figures in scoring,
while Tiffany Isaac led Paine's effort with nine points. The Lady
Lions' Germaletta Dyson pulled down 16 rebounds. ASU's Shundra
Johnson posted 10 boards in the losing cause.
ASU fell behind early as Paine (7-3) scored nine of the game's
first 11 points. For the game, ASU shot just 32.1 percent from the
field, compared to only 31 percent for Paine. In fact, the Lady
Jags trailed for the entire game before a Jones' layup gave the
hosts a brief lead at 34-33 with 3:45 remaining.
Paine immediately answered with a Tiffany Isaac basket to go up
one before another Jones' layup gave ASU a 36-35 advantage with
2:49 left. After the teams traded possessions, Paine's Melissa
Andrews hit a jumper to put the Lady Lions back ahead at 37-36. ASU
grabbed the lead again at 39-38 with just :56 left on Melanie
Massey's basket, only to have Paine's Charvika Wyche hit the
eventual game-winning basket with :39 remaining. Both teams traded
misses before Wideman's errant shot as the clock expired.
ASU returns to action and resumes Peach Belt Conference play
Wednesday when the Jaguars host USC Spartanburg in Christenberry
Fieldhouse. The women's game is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff,
with the men's contest slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
