Augusta State Defeats Clayton State 65-54

Augusta, GA --- The Augusta State men’s basketball team opened up the Peach Belt schedule with a 65-54 victory Wednesday night over Clayton College & State. With the win the Jaguars improve to 6-3 overall and 1-0 in the PBC, while the Lakers fall to 3-8 overall and 0-1 in league play.

Marcus Gradney led all scorers with 18 points. Festus Hawkins chipped in with another double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Hawkins also racked up four assists and four blocks. Jayme Johnson rounded out ASU’s double-figure scorers with 11 points.

Clayton State had to players with 10 points, including Kareen Harris and Charlie Frazier.

The Jaguars jumped out to a 37-24 halftime lead and then saw CCSU make a 12-0 run in the second half to pull to within five points. ASU pulled away in the end, however, for the final 11-point win.

ASU outrebounded the Lakers 39-32. ASU shot 42 percent from the field, while Clayton State shot only 34 percent for the game.

The Jaguars will play host to Columbus State Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
