Augusta University Competition Cheerleading Wins CheerSport Regionals

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University Competition Cheerleading team took first place at the CheerSport Regionals and were named Grand Champions for the college level four division on Saturday, Jan. 23 in Atlanta, Ga., at the World Congress Center.

The Jaguars sent 16 student-athletes to compete at CheerSport for the first time in 20 years. The competition is preparation for the CheerSport Nationals where Augusta will face off against Division I schools including the University of Georgia, Florida State University and the 2015 CheerSport National Champions, University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill.

Coached by the Administrative Assistant AVP of Enrollment Services at Augusta University Kenietha McRae, the Jaguars began practices in November to prepare for the season.

"The road to CheerSport was not an easy one," McRae said. "After suffering two injuries and last minute replacements and routine changes, we pull out our first win as CheerSport Grand Champions. We would like to thank Augusta Cheer Academy (ACA) for allowing us to practice in their gym and making ACA our second home and for all the support they've given us as a first year team."

Augusta returns to Atlanta Feb. 13-14 for CheerSport Nationals. They also compete March 5 for the Peach Belt Spirit Competition and March 20 in Augusta for COA Masters Cheer & Dance Tournament.
