Augusta Baseball Drops Game 1 of UNC Pembroke Series in Extra Innings

PEMBROKE, N.C. – The Augusta Jaguars opened the weekend against UNC Pembroke with a pair with a loss in extra innings on Friday afternoon.

 

The Jaguars (4-18, 3-17 PBC) and UNCP (20-5, 16-3 PBC) were forced into extra innings after both teams were knotted at 2 runs apiece after the 9th inning.  The Braves edged Augusta by three runs in the first meeting of the three-game series.

The Braves brought in the first two runs of the weekend in the fourth inning, but the Jaguars scored a single run in the bottom of the fifth and a single run in the bottom of the eighth to tie the score 2-2. After a scoreless tenth inning, the Braves carded four runs in the eleventh inning. Augusta answered with 2 runs of its own, but couldn't overcome the visitors and fell 7-4.

For AU's first score, Jose Nogueras hit a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Trent Maddox to score. For the second score of the regulation nine innings, Michael Bryant scored on a base loaded walk.

 

Ben Markiewicz hit a 2 RBI homer in the bottom of the eleventh inning.

 

Milan Ellerson was 3-for-5 to pace the Jaguars in game 1. Ben Markiewicz was 1-for-5 with 2 RBI.

 

Will Cantrell started on the mound and pitched the first 9 innings, allowing nine hits for only 2 runs. He was replaced by Benjamin Koch and Austin Heard, who each pitched a single inning in relief.

 

The Jaguars return to action tomorrow at 11:00am for a doubleheader to close out their series against UNC Pembroke.
