Markiewicz Homers Four Times in Series Loss to Georgia Southwestern

AUGUSTA, Ga - Georgia Southwestern swept the Augusta University Jaguars at Jaguar Field in a Peach Belt Conference Series this Saturday and Sunday. Ben Markiewicz hit an impressive 4 home runs in the three-game series.

 

Augusta moves to 4-16, 3-15 in the Peach Belt Conference while Georgia Southwestern improves to 11-10, 10-8 in PBC.

 

GAME 1

Georgia Southwestern scored the first two runs of the game in the second inning. AU's Micheal Bryant answered with a single-run homer in the third inning to bring the score to 2-1. After scoring 4 runs through the next 3 innings, Ben Markiewicz blasted his first homer of the series over the centerfield fence. Unable to slow the hot bats of Georgia Southwestern in the 9th inning, Augusta fell 14-2.

 

Ben Markiewicz and Michael Bryant were both 1-for-3, carding 1 run and 1 RBI apiece. Noah Fritz (0-3) started on the mound for the Jags. After tossing 3 innings and striking out 2 batters, Ryder Willard, Cotton Phillips, Trevor Gordon, and Nyle Grove each pitched in relief for Augusta.

 

GAME 2

After the visiting team scored on a wild pitch to open the inning, AU's Walker Sinclair scored after an error by Georgia Southwestern's second basemen. After allowing 3 runs in the third and 2 in the 4th inning by the visiting squad, AU carded another run by Harrison Aulds on an error. To finish the game, Jose Nogueras hit a 1 RBI homer. Augusta fell 15-3 in the contest.

 

For game 2, Walker Sinclair was 2-for-3 batting, adding a single run. Jose Nogueras was 1-for-2, with one of his at-bats being the final home run of the game. Ben Markiewicz, Harrison Aulds, Mason Robertson, and Paxton Tolleson all carded hits in the game.

 

Brian Trepanier (0-5) pitched first on the mound, allowing 5 hits and 5 runs. He was replaced by Chase Horton who struck out 3 batters in his 2.1 innings of work. Jasper Dubberly and Austin Heard also saw time pitching for Augusta

 

GAME 3

On what proved to be the windiest game at Jaguar field this season, Ben Markiewicz homered three separate times during the game. After Georgia Southwestern opened the game with 4 runs in the first inning, Augusta immediately answered with 4 runs of its own. After Markiewicz hit a 2-run homer, Trent Maddox scored on the throw and Lukas Coker scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the 4th.

Markiewicz again hit a 2RBi homer in the bottom of the second inning, notching the score at 6-6. His third homer of the day would come in the 8th inning, blasting a 3 RBI hit over the fence.

In the bottom of the 9th, a double by Mason Robertson drove John Paul home and Paxton Tolleson scored after a bases loaded walk. Augusta fell in the final game of the series.

Highlighting AU's offensive effort, Ben Markiewicz was 3-for-5 with 3 runs and 8 RBIs. Lukas Coker was 2-for-5 with 1 run while Mason Roberston was 2-for-2 with a single run.

 

Will Cantrell started the pitching group for the day and 7 different Augusta pitchers tossed in relief.

 

Augusta takes on USC Aiken at 6:30pm tomorrow at SRP Park in North Augusta, S.C.
