AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team clashed with the Coker Cobras on Tuesday afternoon and gave up an early lead to fall 8-6 in non-conference action.

Augusta (17-25) met Coker (16-24-1) for the second time this season, after beating the Cobras 14-6 on Feb. 26 in Hartsville, S.C. Coker took the second meeting by outhitting AU 13-11 – highlighted by six runs in the fifth inning.

In the Jaguars' first at bat they put up two runs for an early lead. After sophomore Skylor Murphy hit a leadoff single, senior Harrison Moore doubled to score the run. Moore scored on the same play when the Coker shortstop sailed the relay throw into the home dugout to give AU a 2-0 lead.

The Jaguars built their lead by two when freshman Ben Markiewicz doubled in the fourth inning to plate freshman Brian Smith. AU made it 4-0 when they scored on a fielder's choice, but Coker came alive and took a 7-4 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.

Augusta cut its deficit to 7-5 when sophomore Mason Robertson scored Markiewicz with a bases-loaded groundball in the sixth, but the Cobras held on for the 8-6 victory.

Markiewicz was 2-for-3 with two runs and an RBI for Augusta and Moore was 2-for-5 with two RBI and a run. Murphy carded two hits with a run as the Jaguar leadoff man and drew two walks.

Augusta freshman Clark Adams made his first collegiate start and sat down the first six Coker batters he saw in order. Adams tossed 4.1 innings and allowed five hits for four runs (three earned). Augusta freshman Trevor Gordon (0-1) gave up a pair runs in a brief appearance, before the Jags went to senior Chase Slone on the mound. Slone struck out six in his four innings pitched and surrendered two runs on six hits, before freshman Alex Colon closed out the game.

The Jaguars play at Emmanuel College in Franklin Springs, Ga., on Wednesday, April 17 at 2:30 p.m.
