Jags Knock Off Newberry In 6-5 Thriller

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team held off the Newberry Wolves on Tuesday afternoon to win a 6-5 non-conference game at Jaguar Field.

 

Augusta is now 11-10 on the season and Newberry, ranked No. 4 in the NCAA Southeast Region, moved to 19-7 with the loss.

 

The game was scoreless for the first two and a half innings, until Augusta produced the first scoring of the day in its third at bat. Augusta scored four in the third inning, but Newberry plated two and cut the lead in half. Each team matched seven hits through four innings.

 

After leading 4-0, Augusta let the Wolves chip away at the lead. Newberry trailed 6-5 in the top of the eighth inning after scoring two in the seventh and one in the eighth, but Augusta senior Aaron Chick came in to get the save and seal the win for AU.

 

In a predetermined start, Augusta starter Tony Jones (3-0) tossed three scoreless innings and held the Wolves to two hits. Freshmen Chase Horton and John Micah Law pitched in relief to keep Newberry

 

Sophomore Trent Maddox went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run to highlight AU's offense. Sophomore Mason Robertson and freshman Beau Hanna each carded two RBI on one hit for the Jaguars.

 

AU hosts Paine College this Wednesday, March 13 for a 2:00 p.m. non-conference single game at Jaguar Field. The Jags return to Peach Belt Conference play March 15-17 when they host Flagler College.
