Jags Fly Past Flagler, 17-6

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team opened its Peach Belt Conference series with the visiting Flagler Saints on Friday afternoon. Augusta endured a two-hour rain delay and won 17-6/  

 

Hosting its fourth conference series of the season, Augusta (13-10, 4-9 PBC) produced 18 hits to win big at home. The Jaguars return to face Flagler (13-13, 7-6 PBC) on Saturday, at 1:00 p.m. and Sunday at 1:00 p.m.

 

Flagler's first batter of the game launched a solo homer into the windy sky and the Saints added another on a single up the middle in the second to lead 2-0. Augusta sophomore Trent Maddox hit his fifth triple of the season in the second inning and he scored on an infield single off the bat of freshman Beau Hanna to cut the score in half. An error and single gave AU two more runs as they stole a 3-2 score heading into the fourth inning.

 

Maddox blasted his fourth home run in the fourth inning and senior Patrick Watson delivered his seventh long ball as Augusta went on to lead 8-2. Hanna hit an opposite field grand slam to push AU up by 11 in the fifth, while Watson added another homer run. The Jags blew it up open and won 17-6.

 

In the sixth start of his sophomore season, southpaw Charlie Cochran (3-2) struck out eight in six innings and gave up three runs on six hits. AU freshman Alex Colon tossed the final three innings to seal the victory.

 

AU hosts the Jaguar Miracle Game on Saturday, March 16 against Flagler College at 1:00 p.m. on Jaguar Field. The Peach Belt Conference game will benefit and support Jaguar Miracle at the Children's Hospital of Georgia.
