Augusta Drops A Pair At Columbus State

COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team played a doubleheader to wrap up the Peach Belt Conference series at Columbus State on Saturday afternoon and fell 5-4 and 8-1 at Burger King Stadium.

 

GAME 1

Augusta (8-10, 3-9 PBC) sophomore Trent Maddox hit his third home run of the season to lift AU up 1-0 in the first inning. Maddox and senior Harrison Moore are tied for third in the conference for RBI. In the top of the third, the Jaguars built their lead to 4-0, when sophomore Mason Robertson scored Maddox with a single up the middle and senior Patrick Watson plated two with a single to left field.

 

CSU (11-4, 3-0) got on the board with a solo homer in the third and tacked on another for a 2-0 lead. Adding one in the sixth and two in the eighth, the Cougars came back to steal a 5-4 final score.

 

Freshman John Micah Law made his first collegiate start for the Jaguars and pitched 2.2 innings to hold CSU to six hits for two runs. Freshman Chase Horton struck out three and gave up five hits for three runs, before senior slinger Tony Jones (1-1) tossed an inning of work.

 

Maddox, Robertson, and Watson all had two hits for Augusta.

 

GAME 2

The Cougars took care of game three, leading 8-0, before winning 8-1. Robertson drove in AU's only run of the game with a fielder's choice to soccer Maddox. Moore and freshman Beau Hanna went 2-for-4 for Augusta, while sophomore Timothy Gray and freshman Brian Smith added one hit.

 

AU sophomore Charlie Cochran (2-2) got the loss in four innings of work, giving up four hits for three runs.

 

The Jaguars host Erskine on Tuesday, March 5 and Saint Rose on Wednesday, March 6 for back-to-back 1:00 p.m. non-conference games at Jaguar Field.
