COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team played at Columbus State on Friday night for its first Peach Belt Conference road game of the year. The Jaguars fell 5-1 to start the PBC series at Burger King Stadium.
Augusta (8-8, 3-7 PBC) gave Columbus State (10-4, 1-0 PBC) its first taste of conference play and gave up an early lead they never recovered from. The Cougars slowly chipped away at the Jaguars, scoring one in the first inning and a pair in the second and sixth. CSU senior Kolton Ingram (3-0) struck out 13 batters in his eight innings pitched. Ingram was the preseason All-PBC starting pitcher and was named a first-team All-American in 2018, while leading all of NCAA Division II in strikeouts to set a conference record.
Augusta junior Jose Nogueras homered for the second straight game, launching a solo shot in the top of the eighth to put the Jags on the board in a 5-1 game. The Jags compiled four hits total, as senior Zack Goble and freshmen Ben Markiewicz and Beau Hanna each added a knock.
Senior Christian Griffin (1-4) held the Cougars to three hits in six innings of work, while striking out two. He walked five and allowed five runs, but only two were earned. Senior Aron Chick recorded four strikeouts in his innings for AU.
Augusta returns for game two of the series at Columbus State on Saturday, March 2 for a 2:00 p.m. first pitch in Columbus, Ga.
