Augusta Outhits UNCP In Series Opening Loss

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team outhit the UNC Pembroke braves on Friday afternoon, but fell 14-9 in game one of the Peach Belt Conference series at Jaguar Field.

 

Augusta (3-5, 0-4 PBC) was down by 12 runs to UNC Pembroke (6-1, 1-0 PBC) heading into the seventh inning, when the Jaguars came alive for a run in the seventh and six in the eighth. UNCP held on in the last two innings and secured the game-one win of the series.

 

The Braves brought in two early runs in the first inning, but the Jaguars tied the game in their first at bat. AU freshman Beau Hanna drove in sophomore Trent Maddox on a single down the left-field line and sophomore Mason Robertson plated senior Harrison Moore on a sacrifice fly ball to right field for a 2-2 game. UNCP batted around in the second inning and took the lead that they never let go.

 

Moore headlined the Jags' offense with a 5-for-6 performance and a pair of runs and RBI. Sophomore Skylor Murphy, Maddox, and Hanna each tacked on two hits for Augusta. The Jags had 15 hits to the Braves' 12, but made three errors in the loss.

 

Senior Christian Griffin (1-2) logged his third start of the season and pitched 5.1 innings. Griffin struck out six, but allowed nine hits for eight earned runs and 12 total. Freshman lefty Tripp Church tossed 2.2 innings and struck out four, while giving up three hits for two runs. Senior Tony Jones closed out the game with an inning of work and struck out two while allowing no hits or runs.

 

Augusta plays game two of the series against UNCP on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 1:00 p.m. on Jaguar Field.
