Augusta Splits Doubleheader With Mars Hill To Win Series

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team hosted the Mars Hill Lions for a non-conference doubleheader on Saturday and won game one 17-6, before falling 8-3 at Jaguar Field.

 

Augusta returns to Jaguar Field to host Anderson on Wednesday, Feb. 6 for a 2:00 p.m. non-conference game. Peach Belt Conference play starts on Saturday, Feb. 9 when AU hosts Francis Marion for a doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m. The PBC series with FMU concludes on Sunday, Feb. 10 with a 1:00 p.m. single game.  

 

DOUBLEHEADER GAME 1

The Jaguars outhit the Lions 19-8 to win 17-6 for their second straight win of the season.

 

The Lions hit a two-run home run in the first inning to take an early lead, but Augusta scored four runs in the bottom of the second to lead 4-2. Senior Devin Bilardello scored sophomores Mason Robertson and Trent Maddox on a single to right field to begin the inning. Bilardello and Garret Suiter each scored later in the fourth on a wild pitch for a 4-2 AU advantage.

 

After a MHU homer in the third, Augusta's offense exploded. Freshman Beau Hanna, who hit a home run in the season opener on Friday, hit a solo bomb in the fifth and a two-run long ball in the sixth. AU senior Harrison Moore and Maddox also tripled in the sixth as the Jags went up 9-4. The Jags stayed the course and went on to win big at home.

 

Senior transfer Christian Griffin (1-0) struck out 13 batters in his first start as a Jaguar. He went six innings and allowed three hits for four runs, before senior Zack Goble and freshman Chase Horton pitched in relief.

 

DOUBLEHEADER GAME 2

Augusta and Mars Hill were tied 1-1 after the first inning, but the Lions took the lead in the third and never gave it back.

 

Sophomore Charlie Cochran (0-1) started for AU on the mound and went 2.2 innings, striking out five and allowing five runs. Freshman lefty Tripp Church and freshman Alex Colon each pitched in relief for Augusta.

 

Hanna had two more hits for the Jaguars, while Robertson went 2-for-4 with a run.
