Jags Come Back To Win 13-8 In Season Opener Against Mars Hill

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team played its first game of the 2019 season on Friday afternoon at Jaguar Field and came from behind in the sixth inning to win a 13-8 non-conference contest.

 

The Lions led 1-0 after the first inning and put up a five spot in the second inning. Augusta cut MHU's lead in half with three runs in the bottom of the second, but the Lions tacked on a pair in the fifth. Three Augusta hits and four Mars Hill errors in the sixth inning allowed the home team to steal the lead and go on to win 13-8.

 

AU senior Chase Slone made the fourth start of his collegiate career and went 1.2 innings, allowing six hits for six runs. Senior Aron Chick pitched 3.1 innings, before senior Tony Jones (1-0) took over. Jones faced 17 batters and struck out six while holding MHU scoreless on one hit to get the win.

 

Freshman Ben Markiewicz was 2-for-5 with three RBI for Augusta. The Jags' second, third, fourth, and fifth hitters all recorded two hits. Senior Harrison Moore and freshman Beau Hanna each had two hits with two RBI, while Hanna launched his first home run of the year. Senior Zack Goble and sophomore Carrington Evans each added two hits in the victory for AU.

 

The Jaguars play Mars Hill in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 11:00 a.m. at Jaguar Field on Saturday, Feb. 2.
