Augusta Baseball Brings In 11 Position Players For 2019

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team and head coach Chris Howell announced the addition of 11 new position players for the 2019 season. The Jaguars signed five infielders, three outfielders, and three catchers to join 16 returners for the new slate that begins in February 2019.

 

Joining the Jaguars will be Ethan Dodd, Trevor Gordon, Beau Hanna, Matthew Lee, Ben Markiewicz, Skylor Murphy, John Paul, Cody Powell, Brian Smith, Garrett Suiter, and Wade Sumner.

"I would like to welcome our new signing class of position players to the Augusta Baseball Program," Howell said. "We are ready for the experience and ability these players bring to our team."

 

Ethan Dodd was born in Augusta, Ga. and graduated in 2018 from Westside High School. The freshman outfielder earned MVP honors for WHS and received the Poteet Award during his time. He was named first team All-Region and All-Area under coach Gerald Barnes. Dodd plans to pursue a nursing degree at Augusta University.

 

Trevor Gordon is an incoming freshman infielder from Porter Ranch, Calif. where he attended Heritage Christian School. Gordon was an All-League and All-Tournament player for HCS, while earning defensive MVP honors. He plans to study business and cyber security.

 

Beau Hanna graduated from Winder-Barrow High School in Winder, Ga. in 2018. The freshman catcher was drafted in the 12th round by the Boston Red Sox in the 2017 MLB Draft after hitting .450 his senior year with seven home runs and 48 RBI. Hanna was named the 2017 All-Area Player of the Year and helped lead his team to the Elite Eight under Coach Brian Smith. He plans to study physical education at AU.

 

Matthew Lee is from Lawrenceville, Ga. and graduated in 2018 from Mountain View High School where he lettered in baseball as a catcher under coach Jason Johnson. Lee played club ball for Team Elite in Winder, Ga. with coach Brad Bouras and plans to major in business.

 

Ben Markiewicz is an incoming freshman infielder from Parkview High School in Lilburn, Ga. He was an All-State, All-Region, and All-County selection, while maintaining status as a scholar-athlete. Markiewicz received the All-County Hustle and Attitude award under coach Chan Brown. He plans to major in kinesiology.

 

Skylor Murphy is a sophomore transfer from Young Harris College in Young Harris, Ga. The outfielder attended Winder-Barrow High School in Winder, Ga., and batted .370 his senior year and was named All-Region. His team was second in the nation and were region champions under coach Bryan Smith.

 

John Paul is a local signee from right here in Augusta, Ga. and graduated in 2018 from Aquinas High School. He produced a .438 batting average and stole 21 bases his senior year. A two-sport letterman for baseball and football, Paul was the team MVP and plans to major in nursing at Augusta University.

 

Cody Powell graduated in 2018 from Rockdale County High School in Conyers, Ga. and signed with AU as a freshman infielder. He lettered in baseball all four years and was an All-County Honorable Mention. He played club ball for the Bigstix Gamers in McDonough, Ga. and plans to major in business at Augusta University.

 

Brian Smith is a junior transfer from the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie in Allendale, S.C., where he lettered in baseball and received the Coaches Award. During his senior year of high school at Thomson High School in Thomson, Ga., he was a first team All-Region selection from baseball and football. He helped his team win two region titles under coach Brad Smith and he plans to study kinesiology.

 

Garret Suiter attended Lee County High School in Leesburg, Ga., where he graduated in 2018. The freshman catcher lettered in baseball for three years. His was named first team All-State and All-Region and he helped his team to a runner-up finish in the state playoffs. Suiter played club ball with Team Elite South in Albany, Ga. under coach Hayes Cook. He plans to major in business.

 

Wade Sumner is a freshman infielder who graduated from Coffee High School in Douglas, Ga. in 2018.
