Jags Baseball Introduces Six Pitchers For 2019

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team and head coach Chris Howell announced the addition of six new pitchers for the 2019 season. The Jaguars gained four freshmen and a senior and junior transfer to boost the bullpen for the new slate that begins in February 2019.

Joining the Jaguars pitching rotation is senior Christian Griffin, junior Ryan Cotton, and freshmen Tripp Church, Chase Horton, John Micah Law, and Andrew Swindell.

 

"We signed some young arms and mixed in junior-college transfers to our pitching staff," Howell said. "The 2018 and 2019 new signees will impact the Peach Belt Conference with experience and we look forward to adding depth to our team."

 

Tripp Church is from Ringgold, Ga. and graduated in 2018 from Heritage High School. He was an All-Region honoree in 2017 and 2018 and he was a second team All-State selection in 2018. Church was selected to the Chattanooga Times Free Press Best of Prep Team in 2018 and helped lead his team to victory at the region championship in 2018 and 2016.

 

Ryan Cotton is an incoming junior transfer from Spartanburg Methodist and originally from Carrollton, Ga. He attended SMC in Spartanburg, S.C. and pitched from 2016 to 2018. Cotton graduated in 2016 from Carrollton High School where he was named Pitcher of the Year and first team All-Region. Cotton plans to study biology at AU.

 

Christian Griffin is a senior transfer from the University of West Alabama. He posted a 2-0 record and struck out 30 batters in 18.0 innings pitched in 2018. Griffin attended Stephenson High School in Stone Mountain, Ga. and graduated in 2015. During his time, he was the MVP of the Perfect Game Invitational Tournament and was a first team All-Region selection. Griffin plans to study marketing.

 

Chase Horton graduated from Rabun County High School in Tiger, Ga. in 2018. He was named second team All-Region and his team won a region championship and reached the final four in 2015. An honor-roll student, Horton plans to study physical therapy.

 

John Micah Law comes from Perry, Ga. where he graduated in 2018 from Perry High School. The incoming freshman was a first team All-Region pitcher in 2017 and he was a second team All-Region honoree in 2017 as a shortstop. The two-time recipient of the Academic Athlete Award at PHS plans to major in criminal justice.

 

Andrew Swindell attended Long County High School in Ludowici, Ga. and graduated in 2018 after lettering every year in baseball. Swindell was named Pitcher of the Year and was named second team All-Region twice under Coach James Hobbs. He plans to study ecology at AU.
