Augusta Baseball Punishes Paine, 17-3

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team and crosstown foe Paine College played its annual non-conference contest on Wednesday night and the Jaguars won 17-3 at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

 

AU (12-29) outhit Paine (16-16) 14-5 in the game to snap a five game losing streak.

 

Augusta scored a pair of runs in its first at bat when senior Ty Hobbs plated juniors Devin Bilardello and Harrison Moore with a single to left field. Paine pushed past three in the third inning to steal a 3-2 lead, but the Jaguars loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth and carded two runs on an error and walk to lead 4-3.

 

The Jags blew it open midway through the game and went on to win.

 

Sophomore Jose Nogueras hit his first homer of the season and went 3-for-5 with three RBI and two scored runs. Bilardello and freshmen Mason Robertson and Trent Maddox each had two hits for Augusta.

 

Freshman Charlie Cochran made his sixth start and pitched three innings, before junior pitcher Chase Slone (1-2) tossed three as well to get the win. Slone struck out two and held the Lions to one hit for no runs.

 

Augusta faces Georgia College at home this weekend for a three game Peach Belt Conference series at Lake Olmstead Stadium. AU hosts the Bobcats Friday, April 20 (6pm), Saturday, April 21 (2pm), and Sunday, April 22 (1pm) at the Lake.

 

The Jags host the annual cancer awareness game on Saturday to support the Augusta University Georgia Cancer Center.
