No. 8 Georgia College Tops Jaguars In Series Opener

AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team hosted its final Friday night Peach Belt Conference game of the season at Lake Olmstead Stadium on April 20 and fell 11-2 to the No. 8 nationally-ranked Georgia College Bobcats.

 

Beginning the last PBC series of the 2018 slate, Augusta (12-30, 7-21 PBC) was in a tight game with Georgia College (32-8, 23-2 PBC) until the Bobcats blew it open in the late innings.

 

Augusta seniors Jim Wagner and Brent Alford, and sophomore Timothy Gray each had two hits for the Jags.

 

GC got ahead quickly with a 2-0 lead in the first inning and Augusta cut the score in half when Alford hit a bases-loaded infield single to score Wagner. The Bobcats broke it open with five runs in the sixth as they went on to win 11-2.

 

Senior Matt Meeks (1-5) pitched 5.1 innings for the Jaguars and posted two strikeouts while allowing eight hits for five runs. Senior southpaw Ben Parr pitched in relief for AU, before junior Tony Jones came on to close the game.

 

Augusta and Georgia College return to Lake Olmstead Stadium on Saturday, April 21 for a 2:00 p.m. PBC game. The Jags host the annual cancer awareness game on Saturday to support the Augusta University Georgia Cancer Center.
