Gayle’s Grand Slam Doesn’t Hold Up In 10-9 Loss To Columbus State

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Each team hit score-changing home runs across the final two innings, but the Augusta University baseball team couldn't hold off the Columbus State Cougars and fell 10-9 in game two of the Peach Belt Conference series at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

 

Augusta is now 6-12 overall and 4-7 in the Peach Belt, while the Cougars moved to 13-2 and 2-0 in the league. The Jaguars outhit CSU 13-10 in the loss.

 

AU junior Bakari Gayle hit a go-ahead grand slam in the eighth inning, but Columbus State answered with a three-run long ball for the win.

 

Junior Harrison Moore and freshman Mason Robertson each had three hits, while Moore added two RBI. Senior Jim Wagner was 2-for-3 with four runs, two RBI, and a pair of walks and senior Brent Alford was 2-for-5 with a run.

 

Junior Harrison Moore slapped a single to left field in the bottom of the first, scoring senior Jim Wagner for a 1-0 lead. Augusta made it 2-0 in the third when Moore scored Wagner again on a base hit to left field, but CSU plated three runs in the top of the fourth to steal the lead.

 

Down 7-5 in the bottom of the eighth, Augusta took the lead when Gayle changed the game with one swing and blasted a grand slam to lift AU up 9-7. The Cougars came to the plate in the bottom of ninth and drew a hit-by-pitch and single, before hitting a three-run homer to steal back a 10-9 lead.

 

Freshman Jay Pendley started the game for AU, before seniors Casey Lenoch and Ben Parr pitched in relief. Parr (0-2) struck out one and surrendered five hits for four runs.

 

AU wraps up the series with CSU on Sunday, March 4 for a 1:00 p.m. first pitch at LOS.
