AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team started its Peach Belt Conference series with the Columbus State Cougars on Friday night and gave up an 8-0 Peach Belt Conference game at Lake Olmstead Stadium. Augusta senior pitcher Matt Meeks struck out 11 in six innings of work on the mound.

Augusta is now 6-11 overall and 4-6 in the Peach Belt, while CSU bumped up to 12-2 and 1-0 in the league.

The reigning PBC Pitcher of the Week, Matt Meeks, started his fifth game for Augusta and recorded his season-high 11 strikeouts. It is his second consecutive game with 10 or more strikeouts. The Cougars carded a run in the first inning on a wild pitch, but Meeks settled down and left the bases loaded in the third inning on a strikeout. He struck out the side in the fourth and punched out three in the fifth.

After CSU drew a bases-loaded walk in the seventh and went up 2-0, the Jags went to senior Cody Pugh on the mound. Pugh struck out four in two innings pitched, before senior Tony Jones gave up four hits for four runs and had a strikeout in the ninth inning.

CSU's Kolton Ingram struck out 15 batters in his complete-game shutout. AU junior Devin Bilardello went 2-for-4 as the leadoff man and freshman Trent Maddox had a double to combine for the team's three hits.

The Jags meet CSU in game two of the series on Saturday, March 3 for a 2:00 p.m. first pitch at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The series ends on Sunday, March 4 for a 1:00 p.m. game at LOS.
