AMERICUS, Ga. – Opening the third Peach Belt Conference series of the season on Friday night, the Augusta University baseball team won 7-1 over Georgia Southwestern at Hurricane Stadium.

The Jaguars (3-9, 2-5 PBC) scored four runs in the second inning on a grand slam from freshman Mason Robertson and they never looked back. Senior righty Matt Meeks (1-1) got his first win in his fourth start of the season with 10 strikeouts. He tossed a complete game and only allowed one run on four hits.

After senior Jim Wagner hit a leadoff single and junior Caleb MacElwaney and freshman Trent Maddox drew walks, the reigning PBC Freshman of the Week, Mason Robertson, blasted a grand slam to put the Jags on top 4-0.

The Canes answered with a solo homer in the bottom of the third, but AU juniors Zack Goble and Bakari Gayle stroked two singles, with Gayle's scoring McElwaney and Goble's moving Gayle to third for him to score on a wild pitch.

Gayle and Goble each went 3-for-5 in the win for the Jags. Augusta returns on Saturday, Feb. 24 to wrap the PBC series with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
