AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team dropped a 6-3 non-conference game to the Newberry Wolves on Wednesday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium.

Augusta is now 6-14 on the season and Newberry moved to 10-9 with the win. The Jaguars put up nine hits to Newberry's eight, but AU stranded 10 on the base path and couldn't find the timely hit.

Freshman lefty Charlie Cochran made his sixth appearance of the season and struck out four in four innings in the start for the Jaguars. He held the Wolves scoreless on four hits. Juniors Chase Slone and Aron Chick each tossed an inning of relief and Chick allowed one on a sacrifice fly. Senior Cody Pugh (0-2) struck out a pair, but surrendered two hits for three runs to get the loss.

Senior Jim Wagner went 2-for-4 with a walk and a steal, Junior Caleb McElwaney was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run, and freshman Trent Maddox had two hits, a steal, and an RBI for the Jaguars.

Jags junior Bakari Gayle hit a double in the fourth inning and freshman Mason Robertson drew a walk, before McElwaney delivered a two-RBI single to give AU the first lead. Maddox drove in McElwaney with a single to centerfield for a 3-0 advantage.

AU allowed one in the fourth and three in the seventh as Newberry stole a 4-3 advantage. The Jags loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to scratch across a run as the Wolves went on to win 6-3.

Last time the teams met on March 1, 2017, they played 17 innings and Augusta fell 9-8 in a marathon battle at Lake Olmstead. Each team played 23 athletes in the game that lasted over five hours.

The Jaguars host a Peach Belt Conference series with the Young Harris Mountain Lions March 9-11 at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
