Augusta Baseball Wraps League Series At FMU With A Pair Of Losses

FLORENCE, S.C. – The Augusta University baseball team wrapped its first Peach Belt Conference series of the season with a doubleheader at Francis Marion and the Jaguars gave up a late lead to fall 6-4 in game one, before they allowed a walk-off single in game two to lose 6-5.

 

Next up for Augusta (0-6, 0-3 PBC) is a non-conference single game against Benedict College on Wednesday, Feb. 14 at home in Lake Olmstead Stadium. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. in Augusta, Ga.

 

GAME 1

The Jaguars used the long ball to get ahead early of game one when senior Ty Hobbs and sophomore Timothy Gray hit back-to-back homers to start the second inning and put AU up 2-0. Three innings later, Junior Bakari Gayle delivered a single to plate rookie Mason Robertson as Augusta led by three. The Patriots produced six runs in the eighth inning and held off AU for a 6-4 final.

 

Jags juniors Devin Bilardello, Bakari Gayle, and senior Ty Hobbs each had two hits on the day. Augusta outhit the Patriots 10-9 in the loss.

 

Freshman Jay Pendley made his first start as a Jaguar and allowed three runs on six hits in the first inning, before senior Matt Meeks came in and logged seven innings of work to strike out four on the mound. Aaron Chick and Ben Parr also made brief appearances on the mound.

 

GAME 2

FMU flew to a 2-0 lead in the first inning of the third game of the series and the second of the doubleheader. AU tacked on one in the third on Gayle's homer, but the Pats put up one in the fourth and fifth. Down 5-2, the Jags scored one in the eighth and a pair in the ninth to tie the game, but FMU walked it off in the last inning with a single.

 

Gayle was 3-for-4 with two RBI and a walk for Augusta, while the team combined for seven it's to FMU's 10.

AU starter Sam Goberdhan started and went 4.2 innings, striking out three and allowing six hits for five runs (four earned). Freshman Brennen Berger (0-1) got the loss in 3.2 innings of action. He struck out three while giving up three hits for a run.
