AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Augusta University baseball team begins its 2018 season Feb. 2-3 by hosting the West Georgia Wolves for a three game non-conference series at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The season opener is Friday, Feb. 2 at 3:00 p.m. and the Jaguars return on Saturday, Feb. 3 for a doubleheader at noon.

"With 25 new players it brings some new energy to Augusta Baseball," second year head coach Chris Howell said. "The guys are working hard to prep for opening day which always brings that exciting feeling. We have several different avenues that make up this team and we look forward to going in the same direction."

Howell and the Jags went 21-25 last season in 2017 with a 14-7 home record.

Augusta has met West Georgia in nine of the last 10 seasons and are 10-9 in that stint dating back to the 2009 season. Last year, the Jaguars faced West Georgia five times. Howell got his first win as an NCAA head coach on Feb. 11, 2017 with a victory over UWG under the lights at Lake Olmstead.

AU's top two hitters returning from 2017 are sophomore Carrington Evans and senior Jim Wagner. Evans hit .288 in his rookie season with 32 hits and 14 RBI, while Wagner posted a .263 batting average with 41 hits and 26 RBI.

On the pitching staff, the Jaguars welcome back seniors Casey Lenoch and Cody Pugh who each had five wins on the mound in 2017. Lenoch led the team with a 3.03 earned run average and Pugh ranked third on the team with 33 strikeouts.
