Howell Inks Two In NLI Early Signing Period

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Augusta University head baseball coach Chris Howell signed two incoming freshmen in the National Letter of Intent (NLI) early signing period (Nov. 9-16). The Jaguars gained Chase Horton (Clayton, Ga.) and Ben Markiewicz (Lilburn, Ga.) for the 2019 season.

 

"We are excited about this young talented class," Howell said. "These guys are coming from some of the most recognizable high school programs in the state. They've played in some big time games in their careers and we look forward to their impact with Jaguar baseball."

Name: Chase Horton

Year: Freshmen

Height: 6-2

Position: Pitcher

Hometown / Previous School: Clayton, Ga. / Rabun County High School

 

Name: Ben Markiewicz

Year: Freshmen

Height: 6-0

Position: INF

Hometown / Previous School: Lilburn, Ga. / Parkview High School

 

Chase Horton comes to Augusta from Rabun County High School in Tiger, Ga. The right-handed pitcher was named All-Region as a pitcher and as a third baseman during his stint and he was named Pitcher of the Year for RCHS. An honor roll student and two-time region champion, Horton helped his squad reach the final four in 2015 and the sweet 16 in 2017. He plans on studying physical therapy in Augusta.

 

Ben Markiewicz attended Parkview High School in Lilburn, Ga., for three years where he was a dual-sport athlete in baseball and football. Markiewicz was named All-State, All-Region, and All-County in his tenure, while also being named a scholar athlete on honor roll. He plans on pursuing a degree in kinesiology.
