Augusta Eclipses Claflin, 10-4, In Final Home Game Of Season

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Hosting their final game of the 2017 season, the Augusta University baseball team won a 10-4 non-conference contest over Claflin University on Wednesday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium. The Jaguars were one hit shy of their season high 19 hits.

 
 

Augusta (20-24) completed the regular-season sweep against Claflin (14-30) after winning the first meeting 12-5 on March 14 in Orangeburg, S.C.

 

The game marked the final competition at Lake Olmstead Stadium for seniors Jamal Cummings, Clint Hardy, Cole Janousek, Tristan Jones, Matthew Kuhlenberg, Cody Lanford, Cody Pugh, Tyler Roberts, Joey Stillwell, Will Thompson, and Chance Warnock.

 

Lanford went 3-for-6 with two RBI, a homer, and two runs, Cummings was 3-for-5 with two RBI, and Roberts had two hits with a scored run for Augusta. Rookie Jake Bogosian had three hits for the Jags and junior Jim Wagner picked up three RBI on two hits.

 

In his fourth start of the year, junior righty David Hagelston pitched 2.1 innings and allowed seven hits for two runs. Junior Casey Lenoch (5-2) entered the game in the third inning and got the win in 3.2 innings of work. Kuhlenberg and Stillwell and pitched in relief to hold the Panthers to one run.

 

Aaron Perry (0-3) took the mound first for the Panthers and pitched 4.2 innings to allow 13 hits for seven runs. Claflin used four pitchers in the loss.

 

Claflin took a 2-0 lead with a run in the first and second inning, but Wagner willed AU ahead with a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the second inning to make it 3-2. The Panthers drew a bases-loaded walk in the third inning to tie the game, but Lanford laced his first homer of the season to score two and give the Jags a 5-3 lead.

 

Cummings carded an RBI single later in the fourth inning as AU led 6-3 heading into the fifth. The Jaguars scored a pair in the fifth and solo runs in the sixth and seventh to win a 10-4 game.

 

Darrell Langston and Rashad Bevins each went 2-for-5 with a run for Claflin, while Elliott Melton went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

 

Augusta plays at Columbus State on April 28-29 for two non-conference games in Columbus, Ga. AU meets the Cougars on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday at 2:00 p.m. The games do not affect Peach Belt Conference standings.
